John Bull double corona

This cigar is a well fashioned cigar with premium fillers and lightly roasted wrapper. The John Bull is quite tart and grass-e. It has a very mellow flavor of citrus and vanilla. Although the quality is superb, I feel that it is waisted time if the blend is not up to snuff. I know that Rolex is one of the most expensive watches in the world and is a symbol of wealth and sophistication, but Mr. Bull needs to go to a “cigar making 101″. Maybe back in the day…. say 1925 when it was a rare thing, a cigar, to have readily available. You could get by with sub-standard products, but not these days. This kind of cigar would be great in 8-10 years and should be aged to help stew those flavors of sweet grass, brick dust, vanilla, and almond to become a fine cigar.

NUB Connecticut 460

Well this cigar is just a lot of hype. This Nic. filled and Con. wrapped 4″ popper was a well rolled cigar, but lacked the punch and complexity of a mid ranged Partagas. I give all my respect to the Oliva Family and their crew for a well constructed cigar. It was good to see I could by a cigar for $5 and still get a slow, even, cool burn. I did not have to ash the cigar at all.

But as for the concept of the “Sweet Spot” I was disappointed and in-fact the tobacco turned on me about 1/3 way in to it. I feel by taking the cigar and making it smaller you make the “Sweet spot” smaller as well. I was Not impressed.

Cameroon Label (cigar.com) House Blend

Camaroon Label

This West African wrapped exotic blend was a warming mellow smoke. Its dry leathery nose set a flame to a metallic earthy bouquet. It burned good and slow with a slight hot streak around the beginning of the second third of the cigar. Out of the Cigar.com brand of cigars, this is my second favorite. It has a pleasing taste and a slight after taste, but nothing too harsh. I would suggest to enjoy this cigar with a nice hoppy beer or maybe a wheat beer with some citrus.

Bolivar Petite (Londres)

Bonitas Brand

This little buddy is a mirror of its bigger brother with the same amount of fire power. A smooth delicate smoke straight from Cuba. The dark rich soil gives it a great spicy, deep, and almost overpowering flavor. The finish is almost non-existent and leaves no ill taste in the mouth. It took me 30 min for this little guy, but I think I was nursing it a little. This Picture is pretty close to actual size.

Java Toro By: Drew Estate

A surprising disappointment to the famous Drew Estate brand. I have tried most of their cigars and found not one flopped as much as this one. It was a good light and perfect draw. It had notes of vanilla, cocoa (not chocolate), and bitter slightly un-roasted coffee flavor to finish. The after taste was dry chalky mess and after each draw I needed a large glass of water. I even waited until the second third of the cigar started and the same thing, no sweet spot. It got plenty of rest in my humidor, as I was waiting for a celebration to smoke this Premium cigar, and it didn’t live up to the hype. If I was to smoke another one of these I would suggest a strong White Russian or a smokey oaky Scotch.

Acid Atom Maduro

This cigar was a great smoke, quick, but good (50 minutes). I got a blast back to my childhood. My father smokes a pipe with a french vanilla blend tobacco called “Snowflake” from Tinder box tobacco. It is a special blend that you have to ask the guy at the shop to blend for you. This cigar has the flavors of that tobacco. So for me this was a very memorable cigar. A good burn and mellow smoke. The first 1/3 was a little hot and smokey.

After it settled down and showed its true colors of mint, molasses, vanilla and the small faint smell of Shea butter in the second third of the cigar. I got a draw of smooth leather and clean notes of wet grass near the end. But those could be just memories of early Saturday mornings at the ballpark of my childhood. The ash was very stubborn. I tried to let it go but it wouldn’t break. Half way through it was still holding tight.

This Premium cigar was a great delight and went awsome with a glass of spicy Zinfandel wine and some some of my favorite music. A 5” 50 ring robusto with a bite at the end. You can find this cigar at any of you local smoke shops and at most internet sites such as Cigar.com for a modest $7.00. It is now one of favorites. My hat goes off to Drew Estate. Gurkha Titan

This Cigar calls its self a robust premium cigar. Aficionado’s look to this brand for quality and great flavor. With its Connecticut wrapper and Dominican/Cameroon filler it provides a great balance of the finest materials out there. I found it to be a great relaxing cigar. I had the Torpedo rolled cigar. It was a good cigar, with small flavors of dew, grass and back of caramel. Its label is made to impress, and I was. A large cigar with nothing less than 6” and 50 gauge roll. It took me 1 1/2 hours to smoke this fine cigar and it went well with a grog rum. The subtleties of this cigar melded well with the spices of the rum. You can find this cigar at most cigar shops and on-line spots for about $16. I would recommend this cigar for the regular smoker who is looking for a good robust cigar.

Tabak Especial Negra

This Cigar with its Connecticut wrapper, Nicaraguan Sumatra and Criollo filler, and un-groomed foot is a great tobacco experience. It is fused and blended with the finest trade espresso coffee and rich tobacco leaves to give your taste buds a nice wake-up. Small subtleties of espresso and roasted nuts appear until the nub. It is rare cigar now but give it a few years and all your local shops will carry it. I got this one again at the High-time wine cellers shop in my local Costa Mesa, Ca. But you can find it at select on-line shops such as the “TwoGuys Smoke Shop“ and with thanks to their pic you can see that it is a Maduro and it comes in many shapes and ring sizes. I purchased a Robusto for $7.60 and, in my eyes, it was a good choice. The wrapper was a little too sweet for me but the tobacco blend was great. They do a good job fuseing the tobacco and coffee. I smoked it in 1 hour with a ’91 single malt Glenrothes on the rocks.

Purple Lable (cigar.com) Torpedo

A Dominican filled cigar with a Connecticut wrapper with a mild flavor. It is a good cigar, for the beginners and for those who like a lite smoke. I got it at cigar.com and this is their house brand. It hadnotes of carmel, brick dust, and french vanilla. This type of cigar is not my cup of tee. I prefer a cigar that has much more flavor. I’m sure many people would enjoy a cigar such as this, yet I thought it to be uneventful and monotone. The burn was good and even. The quality of the wrapper and filler was of high standing. I smoked it in 45 minutes and felt like smoking another cigar, which is not good for me. I purchased it for $5.00 as a sampler. Save a mold-e Cigar

If you have a batch of moldy cigars, don’t panic. Take all you cigars and place them on a newspaper and carefully check each one for mold on the wrapper and in the foot of the cigar (the end you light). If you find it only on the wrapper you might be ok. If you find mold in the foot, THROW IT AWAY. Separate all effected cigars and non-effected cigar and place both sets in a Tupperware container that can be sealed and has plenty of room for the cigars to move around. Place the uninfected cigars in the fridge, not the freezer, for a week or so. Now the topical infected cigars; pour some rubbing alcohol on a towel and gently rub the wrapper of the cigar until the cigar is completely covered. Place them back in the fridge and wait a week. The cold from the fridge will hopefully stop the growth process of the mold.

Now for the Humidor.

Repeat the same process with the alcohol and paper towel on all surfaces inside and out of the humidor and throw away you humidification applicator. Yes I know, you have to start all over. Give the humidor a day to rid of all the residual smells of the alcohol and re-humidify you box and when the box is at 70°-70% and shows no signs of mold for one week (7 days) place the uninfected cigars back in to stew. At this time check your infected cigars and see if you notice any signs of mold growth, if not wait another3-4 days before re-entering them to the humidor. For the next month check your humidor and cigars on a daily basis with freshly washed hands.
